Walid Raad began his artistic career in the late 1980s and has since worked primarily on three major projects: The Atlas Group, Sweet Talk: Commissions (Beirut), and Scratching on Things I Could Disavow. These projects are closely tied to experiences of growing up in Beirut during the Lebanese civil war, moving to New York, and an emerging career in a globally expansive art world.
Walid Raad is interested in how different forms of violence affect bodies, minds, culture and tradition. In photography, video, sculpture, text and installations, he draws on historical events and imagines seemingly absurd, bizarre and strange situations and documents. A performance at the intersection of a lecture, guided tour and theatre is performed on 23 different occasions. In addition, the artist makes five of his own screenings in the exhibition.
Walid Raad was born in Lebanon in 1967. He lives in Medusa outside New York.
