The author Ulla Bjerne was the daughter of a wholesaler from Söderhamn and in the 1910s in Paris socialized with intellectuals from all over the world. Ulla Bjerne sat at La Rotonde dressed like a man in a cravat and jacket. The tomboy – la garçonne – was born. Ulla Bjerne published her novels under pseudonyms such as Lars Doll and Don Pedro. The fashion-conscious Grünewald emphasizes Ulla Bjerne's androgynous appearance. With her legs wide apart in neat shoes, she stands confidently leaning back with her hips thrust forward and her hands in her pockets. The combination of a suit and a femininely cut vest, which emphasizes the waist, underlines the feature.
