In the series Oh Mother, What Have you Done (2019-20), Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff has collected archival images depicting detained women. The works have been produced by transferring the scanned and screened black-and-white photographs onto plexiglass with UV ink, after which the backs have been painted with oil paint. Here, the artist returns to the violent subjects she worked intensively with in the early 1990s. The title suggests that they deal with the role of, and relationship to, a mother. The series draws attention to vulnerable women, but also reflects on the issue of guilt surrounding a parent who has failed. In the work The Body of Anthropocene (2020), with a portrait of a worn, beloved teddy bear, von Hausswolff continues her search while noting that we are in a new geological age.
