Yael Bartana has received significant international attention over the past decade. She has been nominated for and received several awards.
Yael Bartana was born in 1970 in Moshav Kfar Yehezkel, a relatively small village in northern Israel. The history of her homeland and the conflict over Palestine permeate her artwork, which also explores complicated relationships between Jews, Poles and other Europeans in the age of globalization.
With aesthetic references to 1930s propaganda, Yael Bartana weaves together conflicting movements that in different ways contributed to the creation of Israel: European anti-Semitism, colonialism, socialism, and Zionism. The origins and development of Zionism are examined in light of Israel's policies toward the Palestinians, and Zionism's moral connection to construction is resurfacing among today's left-wing activists in the form of resistance to the policies of the Israeli state.
