Sharon Hayes (born 1970, Baltimore) lives and works in Philadelphia. With a background in journalism and anthropology, she found her way to New York's experimental theater scene in the early 1990s. Hayes works with the power of the spoken word, from the very personal voice to agitation on burning social issues. In performance, photographs and sound and video works, she moves the private address to the public space. Central to the works are the relationships between language, history and politics. Hayes is today one of the most influential voices in the United States in politically and socially engaged art.
