By the 1960s, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) had outlived most of his contemporaries and withdrawn from the public eye to spend all his time in his studio. He worked restlessly, completing several canvases a day, and repeatedly returned to themes and motifs drawn both from his past and from the long history of European painting. During these years, Picasso's painting became more about dogged exploration than the boundary-breaking of his youth.

Picasso's late works were long overlooked as incoherent or even nonchalant, but in the 1980s they gained new relevance, as painting evolved and a new generation of painters were attracted to Picasso's expressive energy. Today, these works are seen not only as groundbreaking, but also as a powerful foreshadowing of the artistic expression of later generations.
