This Will Not End Well is the first of Nan Goldin’s books to present a comprehensive overview of her work as a filmmaker. Together with the retrospective exhibition and tour of the same name, organized by Moderna Museet, Stockholm, the book presents a dozen slide shows and films that Goldin has made from thousands of photographs, film sequences, audio tapes and music tracks. The stories range from the trauma of her own family history and the portraits of her friends, to a journey into the darkness of addiction. By focusing solely on slide shows and video installations, This Will Not End Well fully embodies Goldin’s vision of how her work should be experienced. The book retains the presentation of the slide shows and shows all images in the same format against a black background in the order in which they appear in the works. The twenty texts, most of which were newly commissioned by Goldin herself, complement and deepen the intention of her work.
