Monica Sjöö (1938-2005) was born in Härnösand but lived most of her adult life in Bristol, UK. She was a pioneer in feminist art and spirituality. Sjöö produced images that expressed her growing resentment of social injustice. Later works draw on ancient religions and belief systems, with paintings from pagan sites and of female symbols from the past. These works embody her lifelong research into older matriarchal cultures. Following the artist’s deep commitment to gender and environmental issues, this retrospective exhibition and catalogue will introduce Monica Sjöö’s artistry and activities. Her artistic practice resonates with many of the challenges of our time. The richly illustrated catalogue includes essays by art historians and feminist scholars, as well as texts by contemporary artists.
