Francis Picabia painted Première rencontre (1925) after he had just moved from Paris to the south of France. Throughout his career, he expressed himself in many different styles that alternate between abstraction and figuration. The lovers in Première rencontre are grotesquely exaggerated with multiple eyes, noses like those from a theater mask, and garish colors. Typical of Picabia is the playfulness and anarchist spirit with which he treats his subjects.

The motif on this poster is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
