An old man and a kid. The subject shines with tenderness. When Marc Chagall painted the picture, he was 43 years old and had lived in Paris for almost ten years. Even before the outbreak of war in 1914, he had lived and worked among the Cubists. It had been a long time since he had been in his childhood Vitebsk, in Belarus. There were plenty of original old men who played the violin and told fairy tales there, as well as goats. The old man and the goat seem to almost float against the snow (cloud?) in the background. That is often the case with Chagall. His childhood memories are like fairy tales. And fairy tale characters obey no physical laws. That is why they never die.

The motif on this poster is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
