Late in life, Matisse developed the collage technique, découpage, which he had used many years earlier to create stage designs and stage costumes. Around 1950, the artist completed a decoration for a chapel in Vence outside Nice. At the same time, he created a number of large-format collages, including Apollo. Both the symmetrical composition and the mythological motif are unusual for Matisse. In the center of the picture, Apollo is seen, surrounded by trees and with the rising sun above his head, symbols of life and fertility in cultures all over the world. Apollo was the god of the sun, music and poetry, and the work can be seen as a tribute to life.
