"The Red Roller Blind" has become one of Sigrid Hjertén's most talked-about paintings and is often interpreted as a self-portrait. A woman lies alone and naked in a room. The expression is absent, her gaze inward. Is it ecstasy or powerlessness that characterizes this face? And is she really alone in the room? Hjertén reverses the traditional roles of art history. Here we encounter the nude model through the gaze of a female artist. Hjertén gives sexuality room to play in a composition that is at the same time introverted and explosive. Sigrid Hjertén never showed this painting in exhibitions during her lifetime, perhaps because it was too private.
