In the winter of 1912, Henri Matisse traveled to Tangier in Morocco, influenced by a major exhibition of Islamic art he had seen in Munich in 1910. After weeks of torrential rain, the sun and the special light he was looking for came. The ground in the painting is painted blue on a pink ground and covered in lush acanthus leaves, just like the luxuriant garden where he worked on the work. Matisse sought the inherent ability of colors to express, in this case dripping moisture, growth and power. The Moroccan landscape looked as he had imagined it based on the romantic painter Eugène Delacroix's motifs from Morocco and Pierre Loti's depictions of the country in the novel "In Morocco".

The motif on this poster is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
