Amadeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy. He spent much of his short life in Paris. In 1909 he met the sculptor Constantin Brancusi and worked clearly inspired by him with sculpture until the outbreak of the First World War. During the war, it becomes more difficult to obtain sculpture materials and Modigliani returns to painting. His newly acquired knowledge of sculpture is translated into painted intense and personal portraits. He drew a lot and preferred to use living model when he created his famous portraits of both unknown and famous people such as Guillaume Apollinaire and Jean Cocteau.
The motif on this poster is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
