Fig trees and acacias; stairs, walled vineyards, a fountain - and people shopping or just resting. The painting, which has often been called The Square in Chinon, is a chronicle of details, painted from a bird's eye view - yet a strongly unified image. Linnqvist came to Chinon in the Loire Valley in central France in 1921. It was the hottest summer in 45 years. He made hundreds of drawings of the subject and only completed the painting after he had returned home to Stockholm. Despite the format, it is a painting that can be seen well up close. The naive style allows the artist to carefreely emphasize what he wants to highlight.
