Ukrainian-born Maya Deren is seen as one of the most important central figures of American avant-garde film. Meshes of the Afternoon is a charged and enigmatic story in which the artist develops a series of film techniques, including slow motion and sharp camera angles. The film's story seems to go in circles, with Deren, the main character, alternately perceived as victim, witness and murderer. The symbol-saturated imagery, in which objects such as keys, knives and mirror shards are given a charge, is recognizable from the surrealist circles in which she was active. Filmmaker and theorist Maya Deren worked closely with artists such as Man Ray and Luis Buñuel, and her influence extends into the present day.

The motif on this poster is a still from Maya Deren's film Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), which is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
