Sigrid Hjertén, View of Slussen, 1919.
Sigrid Hjertén paints a steep perspective from her studio in 1919. Down there, street life is bustling. Hjertén translates the chaotic noise of the street into colors. With a skilled hand, she sets the warm reddish-yellow drapery against the green and red roofs, the blue torn sky and the black chimneys of the boats. The female modernists often depict their urban motifs from a reassuring distance. The street is not yet a place where a respectable woman lives, let alone feels safe. The views of the world are most often from a balcony or a window. In the foreground of Hjertén's view of Slussen stands a small doll with an umbrella, a cinched waist and dramatically expanded puff sleeves - a woman ready for a walk?
