Sturtevant is known for her intentionally inaccurate copies of works by classic - male - 20th century artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol and, in this case, Martial Raysse's famous painting from 1965. She called her method "repetition" and anticipated the appropriation strategies that many artists adopted in the 1980s. This repetition exposed one of the great ironies of pop art - the Warholian logic according to which (mass) reproduction actually strengthens authorship rather than weakens it. Sturtevant not only defied authorship but also questioned the concept of originality and, ultimately, art itself. Raysse's high-tension painting is a staging of how a work of art is created, disseminated and recognized as canonical.
The motif on this poster is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
