In 1950, Josef Albers began his major series The Homage to the Square. Until his death in 1976, he produced hundreds of variations on the basic composition of three or four squares inside each other, each with its own inner light, its own space. This work is part of the series and challenges our perception of color and scale. Albers wrote of Homage to the Square: "Everyone has a different palette and therefore, so to speak, a different climate. The choice of colors and how they are arranged are intended to interact - they influence and change each other back and forth."
