A young man lies surrounded by grieving friends with a suffering expression on his lips. The mirror in his hand reinforces the self-absorbed impression, right to the end. The Dying Dandy is one of Nils von Dardel's most famous paintings. Although the motif seems straightforward, it is nevertheless a work whose meaning continues to elude viewers. Is it an allegory of the conditions of creation? Does Dardel even highlight forbidden homosexuality? The intensity of the colors and the undulating flow of the shapes are clearly inspired by French artists such as Matisse. At the same time, Dardel manages to create a completely unique atmosphere and a tone where sadness goes hand in hand with the background that shifts into blue.
