Lotte Laserstein - A Divided Life
The German-Swedish artist Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993) is one of the most exciting rediscoveries of recent years. The richly illustrated exhibition catalogue with essays on Laserstein's artistic activities in Berlin and her reception in Sweden, as well as previously unpublished letters from herself, deepens knowledge of Laserstein's life and work. Laserstein's current reputation as a great realist has granted her an undisputed place in the history of 20th-century art. Striking portraits, self-portraits and sensual nudes demonstrate her synthesis of traditional painting and modern motifs during the Berlin period. During her five decades in Sweden, she produced an extensive and diverse oeuvre. Works from all these periods, including several works that have not been shown before, together with texts that illuminate the debate on gender and queerness and analyses of her strategies for assimilation in her Swedish exile, will shed new light on the artist.
