Katarzyna Kobro (1898-1951) and Wladyslaw Strzeminski (1893-1952) lived and worked in a turbulent time. They were born in Russia and were part of radical circles within the Russian avant-garde together with, among others, Vladimir Tatlin, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Kazimir Malevich. The October Revolution in Russia and the First and Second World Wars influenced both the political climate and the development of art. Kobro and Strzeminski fled to Poland in the early 1920s as the artistic climate became increasingly repressive in Russia. There they quickly became central figures on the Polish art scene. But despite being very active and having close contacts with leading figures within the avant-garde movements in Europe, they have been omitted when the official history of art has been written.

With Kobro & Strzeminski: New Art in Turbulent Times, Moderna Museet Malmö wanted to broaden the picture of and understanding of the breadth of modernism. The extensive exhibition presented around 60 works by Kobro & Strzeminski, as well as some by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Theo van Doesburg, Henryk Stazewski and Jean Hélion, who were part of the group's collection of avant-garde art.
