Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) forged his own path within European modernism, constantly searching for a new visual language for sculpture as a double of reality. Throughout his life, he held conversations with some of the most influential intellectuals of the 20th century. By highlighting three authors - Georges Bataille, Jean Genet and Samuel Beckett, all close friends of Giacometti - this book shows how these conversations left their mark on Giacometti's artistry. The richly illustrated catalogue presents his sculptures and paintings from early to later works, and includes newly written texts by the British art historian and professor emerita Dawn Ades, the Swedish literature professor Jesper Olsson and the French writer Agnès Vannouvong, as well as historical texts by Bataille, Genet, Beckett and the artist himself.

Jo Widoff is curator responsible for the international collection at Moderna Museet. Christian Alandete is artistic director at the Institut Giacometti, Paris
