Edi Hila is considered one of Albania's most significant artists – a painter who has immortalized his homeland's dramatic societal transformation and captured shifting states in our contemporary world. His painting transforms fragments of reality into timeless poetry and makes the invisible visible – moods, relationships, and changing values. With pink, blue, and golden tones against the grey of concrete, he has evoked both the weight of history and the fragility of dreams.

Moderna Museet Malmö presents Edi Hila's first solo exhibition in Scandinavia and has, together with Hamburger Kunsthalle, produced this comprehensive publication that gathers in-depth texts and interviews, as well as a rich selection of sketches, paintings, and drawings spanning over half a century of Edi Hila's artistry.

Edi Hila was born in 1944 in Shkodra and works in Tirana. His artistry reached a broad international audience with Albania's first pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1997. Since then, he has gained recognition through significant solo exhibitions in Vienna, Milan, Florence, Warsaw, Paris, and in his hometown of Tirana. With a grand presentation at documenta 14 – in both Athens and Kassel – he solidified his position as a central voice in international contemporary art.
