From the early 1970s, the Swedish artist Björn Lövin (1937-2009) devoted himself to exploring the changing society and revealing the gap between the welfare state, consumerism, excluded groups, and the relationship between individual and collective, between imagination and reality. His large-scale environments, built from carefully selected details, constituted fictional worlds in which visitors could move, making him one of Sweden's first installation artists.

Björn Lövin's installations have been shown at museums such as Moderna Museet and Centre Georges Pompidou, but none of them have been preserved in their entirety. Three of the environments are now being recreated for Moderna Museet and, together with newly written essays, the catalogues from each exhibition are also republished in this publication. Hopefully, new generations will discover Lövin, whose practice is characterized by constant exploration and addresses questions that are still acutely relevant today.
