Wifredo Lam grew up in a multicultural environment in the Cuban countryside. He abandoned his law studies in Havana for painting and early on depicted plants in the city's botanical garden. His studies took him to Paris and the circle of surrealist artists. During World War II, Lam returned to Cuba and highlighted the island's landscape, history and culture. In " Tropical Vegetation" sugarcane, fruits and leaves flourish. Totem-like figures emerge. Lam's painting is also influenced by contact with Santería, the local religion that brings together West African and Spanish Catholic traditions. The paintings evoke myths and rites, paradises and hells. It may seem exotic at first glance, but the stories are universal.
The motif on this poster is a work of art in the collection of Moderna Museet.
